Program Overview
The Diploma in Midwifery Extension at Uganda Christian Institute is specifically designed for practicing Enrolled Midwives who wish to upgrade their qualifications and expand their scope of practice. This two-year program offers advanced training in maternal and neonatal care, reproductive health, and midwifery leadership, preparing graduates to take on more complex roles in the healthcare system.
The course emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and hands-on clinical experience, enabling students to enhance their competence in managing pregnancy, labor, childbirth, postnatal care, and community-based maternal health services.
Program Duration
The Diploma in Midwifery Extension is a two (2) year upgrading program.
Minimum Academic Requirements for Intake
To be eligible for admission into the Diploma in Midwifery Extension program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Certificate in Midwifery from a recognized institution (Enrolled Midwife qualification)

Must be a registered Enrolled Midwife with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council (UNMC)

A pass in English Language at Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or equivalent level

Demonstrated work experience and competency in midwifery practice

Equivalent qualifications from other recognized institutions may be considered with approval from the UNMC
Additional Requirements

Medical fitness certificate from a recognized medical facility

Certificate of good conduct and recommendation from current employer or supervisor

Shortlisted candidates may be required to undergo an interview or entry assessment
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the Diploma in Midwifery Extension program can:

Practice as Registered Midwives in hospitals, health centers, maternity clinics, and NGOs

Serve in senior roles in maternal and child healthcare delivery

Provide leadership in reproductive health programs

Pursue further specialization or degree programs in midwifery and nursing
